The biggest difference is how you wear them and how they relate to the sound around you.
Open-ear, air-conduction and clip-on earbuds do not sit deep in the ear canal, which usually suits people who dislike the plugged feeling, wear earbuds for long stretches, or want to keep some ambient sound. In-ear models usually create a more noticeable seal in the canal.
So before choosing, think about what matters most to you: isolation, immersive sound, or long wear and awareness of your surroundings. Getting the wearing style right usually matters more than comparing feature lists.
They can. Open-ear earbuds do not use a tip to keep sound inside the ear canal, so at higher volumes, in quiet surroundings, or when they are not positioned well, people nearby may hear some of it.
That does not mean open-ear models are unsuitable in public — it means paying more attention to volume and positioning. In a very quiet office, a library, or close quarters with others, leakage deserves more attention than it would outdoors or on a normal commute.
Not necessarily. An open design usually lets more ambient sound through, but hearing your surroundings does not mean you can pay less attention to the road.
In practice, volume, ambient noise and your own attention all affect what you notice. Commuting, walking or riding, stay alert, and lower the volume or pause playback when needed.
The advantage of an open design is that ambient sound comes through more easily, but safety still depends on how you use them.
In most cases they put less strain on the ear, but it varies from person to person. A non-in-ear design removes pressure inside the canal, though clamping force, weight distribution and ear shape all affect long wear.
If in-ear models have left you sore or hot in the past, non-in-ear is usually worth trying; even so, pay attention to weight per earbud and how they are held, rather than assuming you will feel nothing at all.
It depends on how they are held and how intense the activity is. Clip, hook and wraparound designs rely more on external support than a tip in the canal, which is usually enough for walking, commuting and general training.
With vigorous running and jumping, heavy head movement or a lot of sweat, stability is affected. Look at the retention structure and protection rating, and judge by the kind of exercise you do.
Because call pickup is affected by microphone position, ambient noise and wind noise together. Indoors is relatively quiet; outdoors adds traffic, voices and wind.
If you often take calls outdoors, look for noise reduction or a multi-microphone design in the specification — and test in the environment you actually use, which tells you more than specifications alone.
