Planning a trip to mainland China and packing a power bank? The question that comes up is simple: will it get through security?

China has clear rules here, and the central one is whether the product carries 3C certification. This covers what that is, how to check for it, and what happens if your power bank does not have it.

What is 3C certification, and why does it matter?

3C (China Compulsory Certification, also written CCC) is the Chinese government's mandatory safety mark for electronic products — effectively a passport for the product.

Since August 2024, a power bank without the 3C mark cannot be sold in, or brought into, mainland China.

Without it, you risk being stopped at the airport, having the unit confiscated, or being refused boarding with it.

Rules tightened further from 28 June 2025

Following incidents involving power banks catching fire, the rules became stricter:

  • Power banks without a 3C mark may not be taken on board
  • Units whose marking is unclear or damaged may also be refused

How do I check whether mine is certified?

1. Look at the product markings. Usually on the back or on the label, you will find the CCC or 3C wording — that is the official mark.

2. Check the manufacturer's documentation — the manual, the brand's website, or notes on the product page.

3. Look up the certificate number on the Chinese certification authority's site. This needs the company details and certificate number, so it is more practical for business users.

What if mine is not certified — can I still take it?

In principle, no. Without the 3C marking, security staff may refuse to let you carry it or confiscate it, and enforcement is stricter for flights and high-speed rail.

Practical advice:

  • Choose a power bank that carries 3C certification
  • Avoid products of unclear origin or without markings
  • Stay under 100Wh (about 27,000mAh) per unit
